Review by Mytvtalk.com
Eager to follow in his big brothers footsteps that tragically died a couple of years ago are Speed Racer (Emile Hirsch) a young racer who may have what it takes to reach the top. His talent is recognised and a big corporate company wants Speed to race for them. When Speed turns down the offer to drive for this big company his world is turned upside and he learns that most of the big races that he has loved watching since a child were fixed. Speed is feeling the pressure from the corporate giants and realises the only way to defeat them is to compete in the race that killed his brother years ago, called the crucible. With the help of his long time rival the mysterious Mr X speed sets off to race without his parents knowing.
This movie was based on a Japanese TV series made in 1960, having heard this and watching the trailer I thought that I wasn't going to enjoy this movie, how wrong was I? I absolutely loved this film. This film is exactly like marmite your either going to love it or hate it, you will find the visual effects amazing or they will give you a headache, thankfully I enjoyed the effects.
Fans from the matrix trilogy wouldn't expect anything less from the Wachowski brothers who are known for their amazing CGI. Speed Racer is no exception, and its easy to see where the films millions and millions of dollars of their budget went.
Now for Mytvtalk.com honest rating
Speed Racer is one of the best looking movies you will see this year, from the multilayered visual storytelling to the CGI and the live action sequences. Additional to all the amazing visuals are a good solid story of loyalty, deception, the will to win and the love of family. Not only does this movie have all these elements but it also has a good cast to bring this movie together, Hirsch does well as the leading man and delivers a strong performance as does John Goodman the larger than life father and mother Susan Sarandon who keeps the family together. Lost fans will also enjoy Mathew Fox's performance as Racer X.
Like I said above you will either love this movie or hate it, I really enjoyed this movie and was pleasantly surprised with all of it. If you end up not liking this movie because of the visual style its understandable. Mytvtalk.com awards Speed Racer a very respectable 4 out of 5 stars.
